Description <div class="field-item field-item-0">AT A FIRE IN THE CITY HALL, MAIN STREET, THE SEAL FELL FROM THE CITY CLERK'S OFFICE TO THE BASEMENT BELOW; IT WAS CARRIED AWAY WITH CHARRED SALVAGE LUMBER AND TAKEN TO THE HOME OF A CITY OFFICIAL, HUGH C. CHRISTIE, AND DUMPED IN THE THE WOODSHED; YEARS LATER HE FOUND IT, ENCASED IN FILTH, UPON THE FLOOR, CLEANED IT, AND DISCOVERING WHAT IS WAS, PRESENTED IT TO THE CITY ARCHIVES. OBJECT IS FIRST CITY SEAL. </div><div class="field-item field-item-1">The impressions are samples of the first city seal for Vancouver, which is now on display in the Milltown Gallery.</div>
<div class="field-item field-item-0">A) SEAL MATRIX; B) TWO SEAL IMPRESSIONS.</div><div class="field-item field-item-1">a) Bronze disc with basal extension on centre back. Extension has hole drilled through side; around extension in arch are maple leaves. Near circumference of disc is "W.M. Philipps/Vic. B.C."; On front of seal in revers is" (1) maple leaves around circumference, (2) "City of Vancouver/British Columbia" (on circumference next to maple leaves), (3) rope in a circle, (4) "incorporated A.D. 1886/By Sea and Land We Prosper" (on circumference of rope), (5) in centre a scene with two ships, two coniferous trees, on railway engine. All imprinted in bronze.</div><div class="field-item field-item-2">b) Seals show locomotive in the forest and sailing ships in the background; above is a motto, "Incorporated A.D. 1886"; below is the motto, "By Sea and Land We Prosper"; All around is the motto, "City of Vancouver, British Columbia".</div><div class="field-item field-item-3">Artifact label reads, "The Seal of Vancouver/Discontinued in 1903/Designed by L.A. Hamilton, Land Commissioner, Canadian Pacific Railway; Alderman, first Council, 1886/Freeman of Vancouver.</div>
