Description The middle class family of the 19th and early 20th centuries was, in part, characterized by sharply differentiated gender roles. Husbands were expected to operate actively in the world and provide economic support for the family; wives were to care for husbands and children and maintain the home. Preparation for the role of mother and homemaker began in childhood. Little girls were encouraged to nurture their dolls and were introduced to domestic duties through toys-miniature stoves, irons, sewing machines, and cooking utensils. This electric toy iron was made by the Dover Manufacturing Company of Dover, Ohio around 1930.
