Description In the 20th century, dolls made from such materials as composition, celluloid, and plastic replaced dolls made from bisque. Composition, which is derived from wood or paper pulp, was an inexpensive alternative to bisque. Celluloid dolls became popular during the early decades of the century. Celluloid, a material made from cellulose nitrates and camphor, was light-weight, inexpensive, and easy to mould. Unfortunately, it was also highly flammable and was phased out when other forms of plastic were developed during World War II. After the war, doll makers produced dolls of hard plastic. Durable and economical, plastic dolls could be easily mass produced, but were inflexible. In the 1950s, vinyl, a pliable form of plastic, replaced the older material. This ballerina doll from the 1950s was probably made in the United States or Canada. She bears the marks "E 16 V W". Her head is made of soft plastic; her body, of hard plastic. As befits a dancer, she is very flexible, with joints at the ankles, knees, hips, waist, and shoulders. She has sleeping blue glass eyes, painted lips and eyebrows, and rooted saran hair. Her costume and ballet slippers are original.
