Preceded by a series of 36 bulletins issued from 1902 to 1905 by the Bureau of government laboratories.
Vol. 1 (1906) was issued in one section of ten numbers, with a botanical supplement of five numbers; v. 2-4 (1907-09) were issued in three sections of six numbers each: Sec. A, General science. Sec. B, Medical sciences. Sec. C, Botany: v. 5-13 (1910-18) were issued in four sections of six numbers each: Sec. A, Chemical and geological sciences and the industries. Sec. B, Medical sciences. (In v. 7-13: Tropical medicine) Sec. C, Botany. Sec. D, Ethnology, anthropology, and general biology.
Since 1919 the sections have been combined and the publication issued as a monthly.
A memorial number was issued with v. 7: In memoriam, Paul Caspar Freer.
